Growing Hardy Orchids (Orchids books)

  • Autor: John Tullock
  • Tapa dura: 244 páginas
  • Editor: Timber Pr Inc (1 de julio de 2005)
  • Idioma: Inglés
  • ISBN-10: 0881927155
  • ISBN-13: 978-0881927153
  • Precio: 25,17 € en Amazon

John Tullock is a writer, photographer, orchid fanatic, and long-time conservationist. He is an active member of the Nature Conservancy, American Orchid Society, North American Plant Protection Council, and Tennessee Native Plant Society. He lives outside of Knoxville, Tennessee (USA).

This is a book for adventurous gardeners with an appreciation for temperate orchid species and native wildflowers. A surprising number of terrestrial orchids are hardy, some able to withstand temperatures down to minus 50-F or minus 45.5-C. Though they have a reputation for being challenging to cultivate, in truth, most hardy orchids are no more so than a rose. This is great news for gardeners, who will enjoy filling their gardens with their enchanting fragrances, vibrant color displays, and long-lived blooms. At the center of the book is a catalog of 103 hardy and half-hardy orchids. In addition to detailing the techniques of cultivation and propagation, the book covers conservation and includes lists of suppliers and organizations offering nursery-propagated plants - an especially critical issue for species in danger of extinction.

Pierre Delforge has studied orchids, observed the evolution of their habitats and protected them for more than 35 years in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. He has written many publications on the subject and is an adviser on European orchids for the IUCN - The World Conservation Union.

'...more exciting than sudoku... This is a guide to pack for away breaks, to while away dreamy hours among drifts of orchids in the warm maquis of the mediterranean shoreline...' BBC Wildlife (July 2006) 'A comprehensive field guide to the 520 species of orchids found in Europe and adjoining regions... I thoroughly recommend this practical guide.' Andrew Byfield, BBC Wildlife 'The photographs are excellent... the text is very informative... I do recommend this book to anyone with an interest in European wild orchids.' The Orchid Review (March/April 2007) 'If you are a dedicated botanist, or just one of the many birders with an interest in orchids, this book will prove indispensible when travelling elsewhere in Europe or just outside its boundaries. I thoroughly recommend it.' British Birds (May 2007) 'Highly recommended, and no orchid fan visiting the continent or the Mediterranean should be without it.' Irish Naturalists' Journal (June 2007).

Phalaenopsis: A Monograph (Orchids books)

  • Without a doubt, the most widely grown orchids in the world are the species and hybrids of "Phalaenopsis," the "moth orchids." Since their discovery by western botanists in the 18th century, phalaenopsis were considered aristocrats even among orchids and were eagerly sought out by the most discerning and wealthy of collectors. With advances in orchid propagation and breeding in the middle 20th century, however, these orchids became accessible and affordable to anyone with an eye for exceptional beauty. Few floriculture crops have swamped the marketplace as suddenly as phalaenopsis has in recent years, with millions of plants being produced for the mass market annually. Moth orchids have helped eliminate the misconception of orchids as temperamental conservatory plants only for the very rich. In the words of author Eric Christenson, we are witnessing "the makings of an orchid revolution." Against this backdrop of change and ferment, Christenson set out to write a definitive monograph of the genus "Phalaenopsis," the first thorough treatment since Herman Sweet's revision in 1969. Focusing mainly on the forebears of today's omnipresent hybrids the species he always keeps an eye on the characteristics that species might bring to today's hybridization programs. With extensive keys and detailed reviews of the taxonomy of the genus, Christenson provides a thorough picture of the current scientific understanding of these remarkable plants. In addition to its scientific content, this book offers a wealth of practical information for the orchid hobbyist. A useful chapter on cultivation techniques is included, as is a chapter on hybrids in their many forms, shapes, and colors. More than 200 color photos and 60 drawings enliven the work and provide a fascinating visual overview. With the full sponsorship and support of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance, Christenson has written an extraordinary book reflecting years of botanical research and horticultural experience with the genus. No orchid specialist will want to be without it. "

Orchids represent probably the largest of all flowering plant families on Earth and are renowned the world over for their exquisite flowers. Their remarkable blooms occur in all manner of size and shape, and orchid flowers range from some of the smallest and most diminutive in the plant kingdom to some of the largest and most flamboyant. Historically, the most popular orchids in cultivation have been those with large, showy flowers, however a significant proportion of known orchid species are far smaller. Within this group lie the true jewels of the orchid family, the miniature orchid species, which can produce some of the most unusual and often spectacular flowers of all. This two-volume work, A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species, presents a richly illustrated insight into the very finest epiphytic and lithophytic miniature orchids currently in cultivation, focusing not only on those species with remarkable flowers, but also the many species that are grown for their striking leaf and plant forms. Produced with both novices and experts in mind, this exhaustive and accessibly written work features individual entries for over 500 different species across more than 120 genera. Each species entry includes nomenclatural and etymological information, as well as cultivation guidance and notes about habitat, conservation status and similarities to other orchids. The species entries also incorporate newly published taxonomic data that is also reflected in the extensive cross-index of orchid names and synonyms, and all species are generously represented with numerous photographs, including images of other species with which they are easily confused.
